Ode To A Blueberry

By Rattus Scribus©
(in tribute to an imprisoned friend)

When one contemplates
the tender blueberry
picked at the moment
of ripened perfection,
made into a filling
with just the right amount
of sugar so as to enhance
but not drown the flavor
of that magic fruit.
Then baked in a flaky,
buttery crust,
so that it crumbles
in just the right way
under your fork.

And then at last --
when a fork full of blue heaven
is raised to your lips...
and whiffs of culinary perfection
arise to your nose
like the prayers of the faithful,
your mouth bites down
the crust yields willingly
the indigo filling laughs
with abandon
your tastes bud parade
and your mind collapses
in failure to find
of the infinite.

And although you realize
that the object of your
mystic transformation,
this thing called blueberry,
was but a moment before --
in the image and form of a pie --
cooling on an innocent window sill
and accosted so unjustly by you,
yet your heart chides your reason:
if this is wrong,
you don't want to be right.

And even as you are arrested
and hauled to the hoosegow
for the crime of theft,
and even as the victims
cry for justice so that
they can move on with their lives,
you know in your heart
that you are but a prisoner
for love,
love of a blueberry
come what may.

I'll never ever look at a blueberry in any other light Ruben.

Rattus: I spoke with the aggrieved parties and they have kindly decided to drop all formal legal proceedings against you, dear fellow.

Tea Rat: That's splendid. The beds in these cells are hard as rock, and the food is not fit for, ah...something and beast. (Humph! I wonder what word comes before "beast"?)

Rattus: "Plant". "Not fit for plant or beast" is how the saying goes. What? Did you think there was another word, another kind of living thing besides plants and creatures?

Tea Rat: Yes, actually. But that can't be right. They don't exist.

Rattus: There you go again, breaching the fourth wall. Now, back to your release from the Hoosegow. There is one catch.

Tea Rat: What, pray tell, is that?

Rattus: You have been released into my custody on the promise that I would see to your good behavior.

Tea Rat: My dear Rattus. Your friendship is unmatched. Your "Ode to a Blueberry" which you dedicated to me, touched my heart. And now this. Getting me out of the Hoosegow. I have to find a way to repay you. I mean I already owe you "from that thing with the guy in the place, and I'll never forget it".

Rattus: Fourth Wall. Fourth Wall.

Tea Rat: Alright, alright.

Rattus: Now let's get you out of this cell.

Tea Rat: OK, but I must make it up to you. I know a smashing little place where they make the best blueberry pie....

Rattus: I don't get it. How did I end up in the Hoosegow with you?

Clever post Rattus, and a rather ingenious buddy you have there.. perhaps the two of you will get to enjoy mock apple pie in the hoosegow..I remember the nuns in the orphanage making it often, and I have to say, it was delicious! I heard that if you put cheese on it, it's even better! ~ Hazel

TEA RAT: Old man, I am one lucky rat. To have a friend that would go so far as to THE BIG HOUSE with me....I just...I....I'm getting all choked up here.. I...

RATTUS: Oh shut it and let's figure out who will bail us BOTH OUT!

Ruben Rivera said...

Rattus: What's a "man"?

Tea Rat: What?

Rattus: You called me "Old man". I've heard of "old fellow", "old thing", and "old friend", but what is "old man"?

Tea Rat: Oops! I really shattered the forth wall that time.

Rattus: Yes, well just you figure out how we're going to get out of the big house. There's a monster of a rat over there, with a tattoo on his bicep of a cat with a noose around its neck. And he hasn't stopped starring at us since you got us into this mess.

Tea Rat: Really? A tattoo? I'd like to see that.

Rattus: Oh, sweet Saint Rodentia.

I am taking up a collection for the bail! Seems everyone is a tad short on moooola! Be there as soon as I can to bail you characters out of the BIG HOUSE.

TEA RAT: Oh Bebe dearest, I KNEW I COULD DEPEND ON YOU!!!!! Then when we get out of the cooler, what about going to get a nice, juicy, fresh-baked pi...........

Jacqueline said...

What? You two in the clinker? Mozes, you better go back to the shed and tinker. Find some tools, bring blueberries, we can hoist up five blueberries at a time if we all stand on each others shoulders. The rats must keep calm.

That big rat with the tattoo is enough to make Gretta flee for cover, we've lost her in the blueberry bushes so she won't be of any help. Plus, her spines could make the whole lot tip over. Mozes on the bottom, next Raccoon, me, Hazel up on my shoulders and Bebe way on top.

To the rescue!!!

Thank you one and all. You raised money for our bail. You brought us food and drink when we were languishing in the Hoosegow. You stood by us through thick and thin.

Free at last. Free at last. Thank Rodentia, Marmot, and Vole, we're free at last.
